A guide to help explore the range of simple video calling devices that are available on the market.

The products mentioned have not been tested by NHS Highland therefore we do not endorse a particular brand or model. Please use this as guidance to find a video calling device that might be suitable for you and your circumstances.

Call Genie

CallGenie uses the Skype video calling system to make calls, these calls are displayed on the end user's TV screen. Calls are auto-answered and can only be made from known contacts. The device can switch the TV on, if it is off when an incoming call is received. When a call has finished the device will return the TV to the channel it was on before the call happened, or switch it off again. The device only works with televisions that support HDMI-CEC, please check this with the company before ordering.

  • Only approved users can call.
  • Uses the TV for visual and audio.
  • Callers will need a Skype account.

Echo Show (Alexa)

Use an Alexa device to video call loved ones. To make a video call, make sure the person you want to call has the Alexa app on their phone or owns an Echo Show or Dot. To make the video call, say "Alexa, video call [contact's name]." If the user isn't able to interact with Alexa, connect the Alexa device to a loved one's Alexa app, and drop-in at any time (the end-user's device will auto answer a drop-in).

  • No touch screens.
  • No usernames, passwords or manual updates.
  • Only allows approved users to call the device.
  • May not require interaction from end user.
  • Can use other Alexa features.
  • Alexa is always listening, some people find this intrusive and have privacy concerns.

Grandpad

GrandPad is easy to use, allowing those who struggle with standard tablets to keep in touch with family and friends anytime, anywhere. The Grand Pad is pre-loaded with applications and services such as call, internet, zoom, email, photos, articles and so on.

  • Wireless charging cradle.
  • Eliminates clutter, distractions and complications of other devices.
  • Secure email, can restricts senders so no junk/scams.
  • Return after 30 days and get full refund if unhappy with the device.

Komp

Komp is a safe and secure communication device that bridges the gap between those that struggle to use modern day technology, and their more tech-savvy family and friends. The device allows family and friends to share photos, send messages, reminders and make video calls. Komp will automatically display content and auto-answer calls.

Key features:

  • No touch screen.
  • The user cannot call from Komp itself. When Komp was tested pilot testers said that adding outgoing calls as a functionality made the device more difficult to use.
  • Calendar clock can be changed to look how you want.

Konnekt

The Konnekt Videophone enables face to face contact with family and friends through a simple interface - a video call can be made with one touch. It requires no computer skills whatsoever. There are no menus, no passwords, no fancy options. Incoming calls are equally simple, and can be automatically answered for authorised users.

  • Remote set-up.
  • No passwords, usernames or manual updates.
  • Captioning videophone available.

MyHomeHelper

MyHomeHelper is a simple to use tablet that doesn’t require any interaction from the device user. Family manage the device using a secure web portal. MyHomeHelper auto-answers video calls, enables instant messaging and can display news headlines. Can also set up timed and random reminders, with responses.

  • Calendar clock can be changed to look how you want.
  • Managed remotely by family.
  • Can be used as a daily or weekly diary.

Video Carephone

The Carephone is a one touch video calling device that makes it easy to keep in touch with loved ones. The video carephone can have multiple callers added to it, each contact is represented as a tile on the screen. Family members can use the Alcove Connect app to make video calls and send messages. Alcove can set up daily, weekly or one-off reminders. The user can be prompted to respond to a reminder and a carer can be notified of the response - or lack thereof.

  • Volume defaults to loudest setting
  • No usernames, passwords or manual updates
