First Contact Physiotherapy

On this page

The First Contact Physiotherapy (FCP) service is available in your GP practice for expert assessment and management of musculoskeletal conditions.

If you would like an appointment, simply contact your GP practice and ask to see your FCP.

You don’t have to live with muscle or joint pain. Many muscle and joint problems can be managed at home with support from a team of physiotherapists.

Safely assess your condition using our online digital referral tool Phio to connect you to the right care, in the right place.

Phio: EQL's digital MSK physiotherapy assessment

Phio is EQL's digital MSK physiotherapy assessment - supporting NHS Highland's First Contact Physiotherapy service.

As part of our physiotherapy service based in your GP practice, we believe it's important to offer you immediate support when you feel like you need it. We are introducing a new digital consultation tool provided by EQL called Phio, to help connect you to the right care in the right place.

Using Phio is an option. Access to an in-person first contact physiotherapy appointment based in your general practice is still available.

Phio is a clinically-supported, digital musculoskeletal system. It is a free interactive online tool that quickly and accurately signposts you to the right pathway to support your MSK condition.

The Phio assessment takes approximately 10 minutes to complete and your answers will always be assessed by Phio's qualified physiotherapy team. If your condition is deemed suitable, you will be invited to download an app on your smartphone with a programme of exercises tailored to your condition. You should receive this within 48 hours. Once you start, a team of physiotherapists are on hand to monitor and support you via a two-way chat.

This service is totally free, is overseen by the physiotherapy team at Phio, and will not impact your access to our other care services.

Using Phio may involve taking part in a gentle exercise programme, so we recommend caution if you're generally unwell right now, or if one or more of the following medical conditions apply:

  • neurological conditions (e.g. Parkinson's, MS, epilepsy, stroke)
  • respiratory issues (e.g. COPD, asthma, tuberculosis)
  • metabolic conditions (e.g. osteoporosis, diabetes)
  • cardiac conditions (e.g. angina, stents, heart attacks or high blood pressure)

If you know you have any of the above conditions we advise that Phio is only used if:

  • you have been told that your condition is stable
  • you have had no new symptoms
  • you have had no recent change in medication
  • you have no pending investigations or scans
  • a health professional has recommended exercise as safe for you
  • you feel comfortable and safe to do so

See links to EQL's data protection and privacy policy for Phio at the foot of this page.

Who can use Phio?

Anyone aged 16 or over and registered with any GP practice in the Highland HSCP area with pain or discomfort relating to muscles, joints or ligaments can use Phio.

How can I access Phio?

Phio can be accessed for free, 24/7, on any device that has internet access.

You can access Phio here. Your GP practice will also have posters and leaflets with the website link and a QR code that you can scan to gain access to Phio.

Why would I want to use Phio?

We understand that living with pain while juggling a busy life is difficult. Phio offers several advantages to support you in finding the right care in the right place, and get started with managing your condition.

  • Phio is evidence-based and clinically-led. Your answers will be assessed by a physiotherapist who helps you find the best care for your needs.
  • It is available to you at any time of day, from any location, on any device with internet access. Therefore, you don't have to be available at a particular time for an appointment or wait for the next available appointment slot.
  • Going through an initial assessment using Phio is easy. You complete it in your own time, at your own pace, and it may be quicker than waiting to see a GP or FCP in person.

Many muscle and joint problems can be managed with exercises at home to strengthen your body with the support of a team of physiotherapists who can monitor your recovery remotely.

Following your initial online assessment, if a clinician feels you are suitable then you will be invited to use Phio Engage, a clinically supported self-management app.

Phio Engage will guide you through an easy-to-follow exercise programme and you will have access to a team of physiotherapists to help you at any time, meaning you don’t need to wait to speak to your GP or FCP if you have questions or need advice.

Is Phio safe to use?

Phio’s data shows it is clinically safe to use.

Based on your responses you will be signposted to the right care, which might be self-management, face-to-face care with a GP or an FCP, or urgent care if this is needed. This process is overseen by Phio’s physiotherapists.

Do I need to use Phio before I see my GP or FCP service?

No.

The existing FCP service remains the same. Choosing to use Phio is entirely your choice, and is an additional tool we've introduced to support you.

Do I need to use Phio as part of my physiotherapy treatment?

No.

Choosing to use Phio is entirely your choice, and is an additional tool to support your MSK condition.

Is Phio secure?

Yes.

On registration, Phio will ask for your name, date of birth, postcode, email address, phone number and name of your GP practice.

Phio is a trusted partner of NHS Highland and has passed all reassurances regarding data protection. See Phio's full privacy notice.

What if I don’t have a smart phone or computer?

Unfortunately, Phio requires a device with access to the internet. If you don't have access to a smartphone or computer, you will not be able to use Phio.

You can still access the FCP service as normal through your GP practice.
