What we do

When you find out that you are pregnant, you can contact us. You will be allocated a named midwife. This is usually allocated according to the GP surgery that you are registered with. Your booking appointment is usually around 8 weeks; at this appointment the midwife will discuss all of your care options and birth choices with you. She will support you throughout your pregnancy and after the baby is born. After your baby is born, we will visit you at home until around day 10 when we hand over your care to a health visitor.

Antenatal classes (sometimes called parentcraft classes) can help you to prepare for your baby’s birth, how best to look after and feed your baby. These classes offer you support for your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Midwives will guide you through up-to-date, evidence-based information and provide practical tips in a relaxed and open-minded environment. We cover topics such as:

  • preparing for birth
  • choices for place of birth
  • labour
  • relaxation techniques - we may use the Wise Hippo method
  • pain relief
  • postnatal care for both you and your baby
  • feeding your baby

What we do

We cover a wide geographical area, approximately 2,000 square miles: from Invermoriston/Whitebridge to Kinlochleven, west to Mallaig/Kilchoan and the small isles of Muck, Eigg, Rhum and Canna. You are welcome to visit the unit any time for your antenatal and postnatal care if this is more convenient.

Following contacting us you will be allocated a "named midwife" based on where you live in the area. She will be responsible for managing your care throughout your pregnancy and until your discharge from midwifery care following the birth of your baby. Occasionally you will see a "buddy midwife" or another member of the team if attending for unplanned care.

We provide all your routine antenatal and postnatal care; and care for labour and birth at home or within the Midwifery Unit when this is suitable. Ultrasound scanning in pregnancy for Lochaber is currently only available in Raigmore Hospital. You will be referred following your booking appointment with your midwife.

Twice a month, we have visiting obstetric consultants from Raigmore Hospital if you require consultant managed care.

Antenatal classes are held face-to-face in Fort William; you will be invited to these at an appropriate time in your pregnancy. The team also provides support for hypnobirthing programmes and can also support you one-to-one for your antenatal education needs.
