Our office is located in Zone 6 (pharmacy corridor) of Raigmore Hospital, Inverness.
What is the Major Trauma (MT) team?
The Major Trauma (MT) team is a specialist team that works with people who have experienced serious accidents and injuries. The MT team is an additional service to the standard care a person receives in hospital, due to the extent of injuries. You may be receiving input from the MT team.
The MT team is mainly based in Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, although we do have links with other hospitals and services across the Highlands. Our aim is to work with you and your family both whilst you are in hospital and when you return home, to support your recovery and adjustment to your injuries.
Key staff members
A member of our team will meet with you when you first come in to hospital. This will usually be a MT Co-ordinator, who will help work out any additional support you need in hospital. You may then receive input from other multidisciplinary team members.
Within Raigmore Hospital we have a multidisciplinary team consisting of:
- occupational therapy
- physiotherapy
- psychology
- speech and language therapy
In the far north we have a team featuring occupational therapy and physiotherapy. There are two rehabilitation co-ordinators covering NHS Highland.
About the service
The MT team work within the North of Scotland Trauma Network to provide comprehensive care and rehabilitation to patients who have suffered major trauma. Our aim is to get patients as close to home, as soon as we can, and to continue their care and rehabilitation after discharge - "saving lives, giving life back".
There are many causes of major trauma but the most common in the north of Scotland are road traffic accidents, falls and assault. In delivering outcome-focussed trauma care there are a number of teams and professionals across the network in community and hospital settings.
Each regional network includes a Major Trauma Centre (MTC). For the north network, this is:
- Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for adult trauma care
- Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital for paediatric trauma care
The North of Scotland Trauma Network and MTC was launched in October 2018. In addition to the MTC there is a trauma unit in Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, along with a number of local emergency hospitals and community hospitals and services that contribute to major trauma care in the north of Scotland.
