Update - Legionella detected in water supply at Campbeltown Hospital - safety measures implemented

Recent routine water sampling at Campbeltown Hospital has detected the presence of Legionella bacteria in the water supply. In response to this discovery, a comprehensive set of health and safety measures has been implemented to mitigate any potential risks.

This action included the temporary suspension of services at Campbeltown Dental Centre.

Although the bacteria have been identified, it is essential to acknowledge that the potential risk of exposure remains very low. All actions being taken are precautionary and reflect the importance of routine testing in keeping members of the public safe.

Legionella is a bacterium that can lead to a lung infection known as Legionnaires' disease, which arises from the inhalation of water droplets. It is important to note that there is no person-to-person transmission of this disease. To date, we can confirm that there have been no confirmed or suspected cases of Legionnaires' disease reported.

We have initiated supplementary pasteurisation measures and want to assure patients and community members that precautionary steps have been taken in all potentially affected areas. Filters have been installed to ensure thorough coverage of all water outlets. Furthermore, robust infection prevention protocols are being enforced to safeguard patients, visitors and staff.

A water sampling program has commenced, with results expected within two weeks. In the interim, health and safety contingency measures will remain in effect.

We remain committed to delivering high-quality services while prioritising the safety and wellbeing of our staff, patients and visitors. Our teams will keep their focus on reviewing patients and communicating directly with patients and their loved ones.

We want to reassure the community that Campbeltown Hospital patient care and services will proceed without interruption, and dental services, including the out-of-hours service, will operate as usual. Any dental appointments that were previously cancelled will be rescheduled.

We sincerely appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation during this period.
