Argyll and Bute Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) Islay Maternity Services, with the support and funding from Bump to Birth Charity, has launched aquanatal classes.
The funding facilitated Midwife Suzie Hannah's completion of Aquanatal Instructor training. Now, she brings her expertise and enthusiasm to local expectant mothers, offering a safe and encouraging environment to engage in beneficial aquanatal exercises.
Aquanatal classes provide valuable support for expectant mothers, combining physical activity with relaxation techniques that are specifically designed to meet their unique needs. These classes provide a low-impact exercise option that is gentle on the joints, which is particularly important during pregnancy. The buoyancy of the water supports the body, reducing the strain on muscles and ligaments while allowing for a full range of motion. This can help improve flexibility, strength, and endurance, all of which are valuable in preparing for childbirth.
The calming attributes and peaceful ambience of the pool encourage both stress relief and mental relaxation. Expectant mothers can acquire breathing techniques and mindfulness practices that will be beneficial not only throughout their pregnancy but also during labour and delivery.
In addition to the physical benefits, aquanatal classes offer a wonderful opportunity for social interaction. As women come together, they share experiences, offer support, and build friendships, creating a nurturing community of mums-to-be. This feeling of companionship can be incredibly uplifting, providing vital emotional support and reassurance during the journey of pregnancy.
Suzie Hannah, Argyll and Bute HSCP, Integrated Midwife stated: “The launch of these classes marks a significant step forward in enhancing maternity care on the island, ensuring that pregnant women have access to specialised fitness classes that benefit both their health and wellbeing. Expectant mothers can anticipate sessions that enhance their physical health while creating a sense of connection and shared experience with fellow mums-to-be. This approach makes the journey to motherhood a more holistic and supportive experience for all participants.
“I would like to once again express my gratitude to the Bump to Birth Charity for their generous support in funding essential instructor training for Tina Cunningham, and myself. Their commitment to enhancing local women's fitness and overall wellbeing is truly commendable.”
These classes are designed to provide expectant mothers with a unique and enjoyable way to stay active during pregnancy. The aquanatal sessions combine gentle aerobic exercise with relaxation techniques, helping to improve circulation, reduce swelling, and alleviate pregnancy-related discomforts. Participants can also benefit from the camaraderie of sharing the experience with other moms-to-be, creating a sense of community and support. Led by experienced instructors, the classes aim to promote physical and emotional well-being, empowering women throughout their pregnancy journey.
New parents are encouraged to join the highly successful Island Baby Massage Classes, which have been a remarkable ongoing success in the local community since 2019. The instructor training was funded by the Islay & Jura Bump to Birth Charity. On average, each week, 10 mothers and their babies, aged from birth to 1 year, attend the classes. They are supported by Greta MacLellan, our Family Support Worker for Health Visiting, and Islay Midwife Tina Cunningham.
The gentle, rhythmic stroking of a baby's body offers a variety of benefits, including enhanced bonding, relief from ailments such as wind and constipation, improved sleep for babies, and promotion of physical brain development. We also incorporate singing, play, and chatting into the sessions. For mothers, the classes not only promote bonding but also improve mental health and provide opportunities to socialise with other parents.
Both classes offer an exceptional opportunity for mums-to-be and new parents to connect and share their experiences and offer a supportive network offering both physical health and wellbeing and social benefits.
