A Physician Associate based at Raigmore has been honoured by the Faculty of Physicians Associates by winning the prestigious ‘Physician Associate of the Year’ award at a ceremony held in London earlier this month.
Liam Allan, a Physician Associate (PA) based in the respiratory department at Raigmore Hospital, has worked at the hospital for the past five years providing exceptional care to patients and contributing significantly to his department.
Initially focusing on caring for inpatients, Liam has expanded his role to include supporting outpatient clinics. Beyond his clinical responsibilities, he has played a key role in establishing the PA profession at a national level and contributes to the MSc Physician Associate course at the University of Aberdeen.
Dr Edward Paterson, Consultant Respiratory Physician with NHS Highland, praised Liam and his colleagues. He said: “All of the PAs at Raigmore Hospital significantly enhance the quality of care patients receive. They are knowledgeable, diligent, and work at a very high level within their specialist areas, all while being supported and supervised by doctors.
“PAs provide consistency within departments and are a versatile part of the workforce, helping to make services more resilient.
“This recognition underscores not only Liam’s dedication and contribution to patient care but also the growing importance of Physician Associates in supporting modern healthcare delivery.”
Liam said: “I am overwhelmed by the kind messages from colleagues, mentors, family and friends since receiving this award. I am truly honoured to be named by the Faculty of Physician Associates as UK Physician Associate of the Year for 2024.
“This achievement is a reflection of the inspirational patients and colleagues that I have the privilege of working with every day. Being a Physician Associate is about teamwork and collaboration, working to deliver quality care for our patients. I will continue to work for the people of the Highlands to support quality health care provision.
“As this profession moves into its next chapter, I look forward to continuing to learn and grow alongside such dedicated people.”
