Work placements and volunteering

Volunteering or doing a work placement can provide valuable healthcare experience that could help you when applying to college, university, or a new job in the NHS.

Return to practice

If you've previously worked as a registered healthcare professional, we want to encourage you to return to work in the NHS.

Qualified healthcare professionals, including nurses and allied health professionals, can use the return to practice process to update their skills through placement-based learning and study. It leads to readmission to a professional register. Professional bodies, such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council and the Health and Care Professions Council, will confirm specific requirements for your profession.

There are many reasons why you may not have practiced, such as:

  • caring or parental responsibilities
  • illness
  • travel
  • other career routes

We value the skills you have gained while you have been away and look forward to your return. Different requirements apply, depending on how long you have been out of professional practice.
