Return to practice
If you've previously worked as a registered healthcare professional, we want to encourage you to return to work in the NHS.
Qualified healthcare professionals, including nurses and allied health professionals, can use the return to practice process to update their skills through placement-based learning and study. It leads to readmission to a professional register. Professional bodies, such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council and the Health and Care Professions Council, will confirm specific requirements for your profession.
There are many reasons why you may not have practiced, such as:
- caring or parental responsibilities
- illness
- travel
- other career routes
We value the skills you have gained while you have been away and look forward to your return. Different requirements apply, depending on how long you have been out of professional practice.
Service leavers and veterans
NHS Highland was among almost 200 organisations awarded the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Gold Award for 2023.
The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) can help you understand your qualifications, and map your qualifications and experience to NHS pathways and roles. Learn more about the framework and the level of your qualifications at SCQF Support for Veterans.
International recruitment
The NHS is the largest employer in Scotland, and international recruitment plays an important role in our workforce strategy, to grow and enhance our skills, expertise and talent with overseas candidates coming to live and work in Scotland.
If you are ready to make the move to our vibrant, diverse and dynamic country we have all the information and support you need to start your journey.
